Introducing Woodward Chartered Surveyors

We deliver value for money to our clients through quality inspections and clear helpful reporting.

We are the largest regional practice of Chartered Surveyors.  With five full time Chartered Surveyors, two highly regarded specialist consultants and a team of five in administration.

Many surveyors work alone.  Our surveyors have instead chosen to be part of a team because we know the value of specialisation and a constant exchange of professional views.  We are believers in Life-Long Learning and meet twice a month to share information on values, changes in the law, new building techniques and materials.  This is a very real difference that we pass on in our survey reports to our clients.

We are regulated by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors.  If your survey includes a valuation, this will be done by a Registered Valuer.

Range of services

Our surveyors are predominantly BUILDING SURVEYORS and residential PROPERTY VALUERS.  Much of our daily work is Residential Property either diagnosing defects, advising buyers with House and Flat Purchase Surveys and Valuations or property undergoing major refurbishment or building work.

We also have a range of services for Commercial Property, including Schedules, specifications, special Condition Reports and of course full Building Surveys.

Our surveyors work from locations from Oxford to Oxford Street, from locations in Prestwood near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire,  Chesham on the Bucks - Herts borders, Rickmansworth and Watford in Hertfordshire, Northwood and Harrow in Middlesex. Our administration office is in Rickmansworth, registered office is at Harrow on the Hill in North West London, and The Mayfair Office in Thayer Street, London, W1.

For Corporate Clients and private banks, we cover the UK, whether its a Starbucks shop in Edinburgh or Fat Face in Exeter.

Meet the team

  • Stephen Cornish

    Managing Director and Chartered Surveyor

A well known and respected Chartered Surveyor throughout Middlesex, North West London and Central London, Steve (Cornish) and Stephen (Woodward) have worked together since the late 1980’s.  Steve is to be found in either the Mayfair or Rickmansworth office well before the sun, and most surveyors, are out of bed and has an insatiable passion for architecture and its history.  He has a Doctorate in building history, a subject that finds him lecturing at Birkbeck Collegue University of London. Steve is a Fellow of the RICS, a Fellow and Director of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors and member of the Pyramus and Thisbe Club for party wall surveyors.  He lectures on Party Wall maters and is a widely consulted  "Third Surveyor"  settling Party Wall disputes between Party Wall surveyors.

  • James Bush

    Director and Chartered Surveyor

A Building Surveyor and valuation specialist, James joined the Company from Countrywide and has Central London experience gained at Healey & Baker and Knight Frank, where Stephen first met him on a joint project.  James’ calm and relaxed nature belies a huge capacity and enthusiasm for his work.  In his vicinity no clay disc is safe, James is as accurate with a 12 bore as he is with his Protimeter.

  • Stephen Woodward

    Company Director

Stephen handles the day to day business of the companies and oversees particularly administrative systems, corporate marketing, I.T., business expansion, compliance, human resources and accounts.  Stephen, who trained at Chestertons before moving to Harrow on the Hill, is also sole Director of the agency company, Woodward Estate Agents, operating in Residential Sales, Letting and Estate Management.  In his spare time he is a specialist at falling out of boats.

  • Doug Snell

    Director and Chartered Surveyor

Now based in Hertfordshire, Doug previously worked at the West End firm Godfrey Vaughan (now part of Colliers) and Knight Frank, bringing this knowledge to our Central London work.  As well as a love and deep understanding of how buildings are put together, Doug has also rebuilt a classic 1967 Porsche 911 and as a Navy Reservist spent time in a nuclear submarine "somewhere" in the Atlantic!

  • Kate Farrar

    Director and Chartered Surveyor

Kate joined us following 13 years at a West London firm of Chartered Building Surveyors where she honed her skills as a Chartered Surveyor, experienced in residential and commercial building surveys, schedules of condition and contract administration.  Her knowledge of West London and home patch near the borders of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire makes her a specialist in those areas.  When not analysing buildings, Kate is a proud Mum of three (including twins) which keeps her busy enough!

  • Stephen Hipperson

    Chartered Surveyor

Steve (yes another one) is an eminently experienced and seasoned Building Surveyor.  At home either with residential or commercial building surveys, Steve’s former career includes Strutt & Parker, 19 years as a partner in Harrow and Rickmansworth and a stint with Countrywide.  He is our nominated Company Golfer, so if you have some client hospitality coming up, Steve is our man.

  • David Vizard

    Party Wall Surveyor

With over 35 years’ experience in property there is little David has not seen.  David joined us as a specialist in Party Wall matters and has a deep understanding of his subject.  When not standing in foundation trenches or reviewing architect’s plans, he is to be found cycling, swimming or running and sometimes, all three one after the other!

  • Adam Stimpson

    Associate Chartered Surveyor

Adam cut his teeth at a substantial, national surveying company and joined us to complement the Building Surveying team.  He has substantial experience in property valuation and provides Probate and Matrimonial valuations as well as surveys for Home Buyers and building schedules.  Another keen cyclist, Adam completed the London to Brighton with our charity team in 2015 and on his own many times since.

  • Tim Harris

    Chartered Surveyor

Tim, who joined full time in 2003, now consults for both ourselves and a very local, Local Authority.  Tim specialises in Design, Building Regulations and Planning matters.  He wins our trophy for “Surveyor with the most initials after his name”.

  • Gemma Walker

    Office Manager

Every Team needs a centre of operations and this is our Gemma.  As well as helping clients through the process of choosing and booking their survey Gemma is our Office Manager, overseeing the smooth running of our Administrative systems. She is devoted to Ralph (her Boston Terrier), loves Bake-Off and with her Degree in Fashion Design produces some great looking cakes!

  • Kay Hawker Woodward Chartered Surveyors

Kay looks after the entire customer journey from your initial enquiry to make sure you get the right kind of survey through to issuing the final report.  She manages the Surveyors diaries and keeps everyone in touch with what is going on. As a former admissions officer at a highly regarded local school she is used to the pressure!  Kay is our customer care expert, described by one customer as having ".. a style to reassure a newcomer .... in a self assured, calm and knowledgeable way".

  • Selena Lester

Selena has an extensive background in property and uses her knowledge to make sure our clients get the best advice on which survey will suit them.  Always helpful she guides clients all the way through the surveying experience.  When not doing this Selena is a fantastically busy Mum and self-confessed “travelholic”.
